Course related MyEconLab FAQ

Q: Why are we using it in the course?
A: Working through the problems on the MyEconLab give you many opportunities to practice, build skills and get feedback on your learning. This is a cumulative course and the MyEconLab weekly homeworks also keep you on track, the grades give you an incentive to complete them. If complemented with work on the ungraded problem sets and lectures, regular effort pays off with a deeper conceptual understanding.

Q: When do the homeworks start?
A: Right away. The due date is usually Tuesday at 11pm following the lecture, however please check the due date on the problem set. The first homework will have an extended due date to accommodate students who register late.

Q: How many homeworks are there on average?
A: There will be one per lecture on average. There may be some optional problem sets which are not graded to highlight some additional study material available on MyEconLab.

Q: Do I need a credit card to buy it?
A: No. You can buy an access code from the Text information desk in the UofT bookstore. Please check with the bookstore what the return policies are BEFORE you purchase it.

Q: Can I try it before buying it?
A: From the website – ” Temporary Access. If you’re waiting for financial aid and can’t pay immediately, you can access the full set of features in your instructor’s online course without payment for 14 days. The temporary access option enables you to start your coursework and avoid missing deadlines set by your instructor. You’ll get reminder emails with payment instructions before your temporary access expires. To stay in your course, use an access code or pay by credit card or PayPal. If you don’t pay by the expiration date, you lose access to your course and get an expiration email with payment instructions. Once you pay for full access, you regain any coursework you completed before losing access. Note: Once you use the temporary access option for a course, you can’t use the option again for that same course.”

Q: I’m trying to enter my student number but it is giving me an error and asking me to contact my instructor
A: Please clear your cache and try to log in again.  The guide is here https://support.pearson.com/getsupport/s/article/Deleting-Browser-Cached-Files-and-Cookies. Technical support at MyEconLab strongly recommends that you do not use Windows 10 and the Edge browser just yet. They recommend Firefox as it is their most supported browser.  If you have any Safari/Mac issues the troubleshooting link is here.

Q: What if MyEconLab marks my answer as incorrect, but it is actually correct?
A: It is an automated grading system and sometimes minor differences are graded as incorrect when they are correct. If this happens, do the following:
(1) Use the ask my publisher button to report it to MyEconLab so they can fix the grading
(2) Use the ask my instructor button to send me an email about it. After verifying it, I will manually change your grade so you get credit for the question.

Course related TopHat FAQ

Q: Why are we using it in the course?
A:  When you actively engage with the material you develop a better understanding of the concepts and are able to identify exactly what you have and have not understood. Doing this in class allows you to ask me the questions as they arise and I can address them right away. Technology allows us to collect your responses efficiently so everyone can participate. Since the results are immediate, it gives me the ability to identify and address any conceptual errors right away. We are using it for grades because experience has taught me that without it students don’t have enough incentive to answer. We are using TopHat in particular because of the offline mode which addresses concerns about connectivity issues.

Q: What if I enrolled in the wrong section?
A: You need to inform me ASAP and I’ll switch you to the correct section. When I remove you all your participation information/points will be lost which is why you need to ensure that you sign up for the correct section.

Q: If I attend a section that I’m NOT enrolled in, can I still get participation points?
A: No. Each section in TopHat is treated as a separate course. To have your answer counted you need to answer your section’s questions at the time they are being asked. No exceptions.

Q: Do I need a credit card to buy it?
A: No. You can buy a physical scratch card with an access code from the UofT bookstore. Please check with the bookstore what the return policies are BEFORE you purchase it. You can buy them from the Text information desk.

Q: How do I sign up if I bought a physical access code from the Bookstore?
A: Go to http://www.tophat.com/prepaid

Q: Can I try it before buying it?
A: This is what the Tophat representative sent me: “There are two ways the trial or free policy works:
1) A student can send a text message in from their phone via SMS to any question on the screen to start the process of creating a temporary SMS account that will last for 7 days.
2) A student can go to the direct URL of a course and click ‘create account’, and then ‘skip I’m in class’ to create a 7 day free account on the web. After 7 days they will be prompted to pay to continue to use Top Hat for the class.

Q: I joined the class after the first/second week of class what are my options for those lectures?
A: The first week does not count for a grade. It is to get you used to the software. We will be dropping your lowest 2 scores over the year to account for any missed lectures. In addition, the last lecture (lec. 24) will serve as a make-up scores just for lecture 2. Your score for that lecture will substitute for the second lecture if it is higher. This is available to all students, not just the ones who registered after the first week.

Q: What should I do if my Wi-Fi connectivity is bad during lecture?
A: If you are using the app, it will prompt you to enter office mode. It will date/time stamp your answers and submit them later when you have a connection. You will get credit for the question as long as it was answered during the time frame when the question was open for answers.
